Governor Newsom signed an emergency bill (SB 91) on Friday that extends the eviction moratorium for Californians suffering from financial hardship due to COVID-19 through June 2021.
The measure prevents landlords from evicting tenants who pay at least 25% of their rent through June and attest they face financial hardship because of COVID-19 and its effect on the economy.
The bill also provides $2.6 billion in federal funds for rent subsidies that will help pay most past-due rent by low-income tenants dating back to last April.
Landlords are required to send a notice to residents who have not paid their rent, no later than February 28, 2021, or face the possibility of not being able to evict the tenant for nonpayment of rent. More on California’s Rental Assistance Program can be found here.
